What is Risk?

Risk is defined as the "effect of uncertainty on objectives" (ISO 31000:2009).

There are five categories of risk that small business and not-for-profit organisations must manage:

  • Strategic risks - including protection of intellectual property, loss of major accounts or funding, new business opportunities
  • Compliance - complying with legislative and contractual requirements
  • Financial - including managing bad debts
  • Operational - including security, asset management (including loss prevention, theft, fire), staff management, and operational processes
  • Environmental - such as natural disasters.
